After realizing the red rail was heavy and had poor power we decided to try lightening it and adding some ponies. A guy in Seattle had a turbo subaru with adapter that we picked up for a reasonable amount of money and the switch was on. The installation was pretty straightforward as the adapter bolted up to the tranny and the wiring for the fuel injection was only mostly a rat's nest. After some goofing around with the computer and tweaking things here and there it fired off. The power was pretty good but it tended to miss in the higher RPM's. Checking out the motor found the oil to be a nice brown color. Thus the replacement of the head gaskets was started. The passenger head went well and all was well. The driver's side, however, had most of the head bolts stripped out. This motor was not taken very good care of. We drilled out the holes and inserted helicoils. When installing the head all of the coils held but one. I was only able to get 30lbs of torque on it but left it at that and crossed my fingers. What messed us up next was the cams didn't seem to align properly to the crank. The timing was all off and the clock locations did not match. The book said to look at the flywheel for marks but, go figure, we had a bug flywheel with no reference marks.
