Now I am ready to start working on the rear
part of the cage assembly. I have a few ideas floating around my head on
how I want this to look. After spending most of last week browsing through
old magazines, and scouring the internet for rear cage ideas, I came to this
conclusion: I am going to have to be different than everyone else, and get crazy
with it.
I start by trimming off yet MORE sheet metal off the rear. I decided a
little while ago, to take the entire rear louver thingy off all together,
because it looks all silly and stuff.
I must also toss the motor on to give me an idea as to the actual length and
width of the cage's final product. I had to prop the motor up from the
bottom with jack stands, due to the lack of support in front of the
torsion housing. This will cometh after I have a basic idea of how the
rear cage will go. I will also tie motor mounts into the rear cage lower
appendages to assist in supporting the Rabbit motor, as it does out weigh the
standard air cooled bug motor.
I got a little ahead of myself and forgot to shoot "HOW I DID IT"
pics, But basically, I made the horizontal bars first, notched and clamped them
to the rear roll bar. Then I had to support the ends with tie downs so
that they would not simply flop in the wind as I attempted to add weight to
them.
Here is where I started to create a different rear cage than most. It
is actually very similar in design as some of the open class racing bajas.
The next morning, I went out and shot a few pics of the rear cage as I left
it when I went to bed. I have a rather small garage, so I have to pack
everything in tight just to move around in it. For convenience I have most
of my shop tools on wheels, so I can roll them where there is some open
space.
